Go to Related Record
Here's one way to create a button that activates the “Go to Related Record” command. On
the Customers layout of the JobsInvoices database, the Customer's Name appears at the top
of the layout in a merge field. In the following steps, you'll create a button on the Jobs layout
that goes to the left of the customer name. When you click the button, it takes you to the
proper customer record.
1. Switch to the Jobs layout and then go to Layout mode .
You always add buttons in Layout mode.
2. Select the text tool, click just to the left of the customer's name and then type a
“>” symbol. Use the Inspector ( Copying Object and Part Styles ) to make the
symbol's font match the text block it'll sit next to .
The “>” symbol is a commonly used button for revealing detail or navigating to a re-
lated page.
With the text block still selected, choose Format→Button Setup.
The Button Setup dialog box appears.
3. From the list's Navigation section, select the “Go to Related Record” script step.
When the Options section of the window appears, click Specify .
The “Go to Related Record” Options dialog box appears ( Figure 5-22 ).
4. From the “Get related record from” pop-up menu, choose Customers .
You're specifying which table occurrence you want to go to.
5. From the “Show record using layout” pop-up menu, choose Layout .
The Specify Layout window appears. In this case, there's only one layout in the list,
because you have only one layout associated with the Customers table. But in a data-
base where there's more than one layout associated with a table, you get to choose
which one to show. For now, leave both “Result Options” choices unchecked.
6. Click OK until you're back on the layout .
The button is set up. Use the View→Show→Buttons command to display an identify-
ing badge on all of the current layout's buttons. (These badges appear only in Layout
mode.)
