then FileMaker leaves the lookup field untouched—its value before the lookup re-
mains in place.
8. In the “If no exact match, then” group, turn on “use,” and leave the associated
text box empty .
If there's no customer record, the street address field should be blank. If you leave this
set to “do not copy,” then any existing address (for a different customer, perhaps) is
left in the field. (See the box on the next page for other “If no exact match, then” op-
tions.)

You have other fields to create, but first, you'll see how this one works.
Now switch to the Invoices layout and then add the new field to it ( Adding New Fields to a
Layout ) . When you choose a job from the Jobs table, the Invoices address field looks up the
appropriate address from the Customer table. If you create an invoice and give it a valid Job
ID number but no data shows up, check the Customer record to make sure you've entered ad-
dresses for your customers.
To finish your Invoices layout, create lookup fields for the remaining customer data you'll
store in the Invoice table (see the following list). Use the same options as in the steps on the
previous pages, or—to save clicks—duplicate the Street Address field, change its name and
then just change the field from which it looks up. That way, you get all the other lookup set-
tings for free. Then put the new fields on the layout and create a few new records to watch
the lookups in action:
▪ Company Name
▪ First Name
▪ Last Name
▪ City
▪ State
▪ Zip Code
