Start with a Test Run
Nothing is perfect, not even FileMaker. So when you're planning your conversion, do a test
conversion first. FileMaker creates a log file listing everything that it changed during conver-
sion, and you can use it to your advantage. Any problems that occur (for example, if an ele-
ment can't be converted), are noted in the conversion log, so you can go back and test these
items, and edit or rebuild them manually.
Then test the converted file thoroughly to see if any problems crop up. Even if the conver-
sion log shows no errors, put the file through its paces to verify that you won't have any
showstopping issues later. Test your scripts and layouts to make sure they function as you in-
tend, and make sure that all your accounts still work. This test conversion lets you factor that
extra time into your schedule. Once you've done this dry run, you'll know how much time to
allow for the real thing.
Most conversions go very smoothly, with only cosmetic problems, like line patterns convert-
ing a little thicker or in a darker color than in the old files. If you're a stickler for detail, you
can fix these cosmetic glitches. But rest assured, they won't change the way your database
stores and manages data or how its scripts behave.
You can convert a single file or convert multiple files at once:
▪ Use single-file conversion for standalone database files that don't display related data
from other files.
▪ Use multiple-file conversion to convert all the files in a relational database. This method
keeps your relationships intact after conversion.
Converting a Single File
You can't convert files when they're open or are being shared. So if the file is open, close it.
If it's shared, either on FileMaker Server or by FileMaker Network Sharing, disconnect all
clients and then close the file.
TIP
If you're doing a test conversion, you can run your test on a backup copy of the file. That way, you
won't disturb your users for your test.
Once the file is closed, start by opening FileMaker Pro 13.
1. Choose File Open and then select the file you want to convert .
