Database Reference
In-Depth Information
1. Log in to the FileMaker Server Admin Console .
Use the account name and password you created when you installed FileMaker Serv-
er. After you log in, the Admin Console's Status panel appears.
2. At the left side of the console, click the Web Publishing link .
The Web Publishing pane appears. It has four tabs: General Settings, PHP, XML, and
FileMaker WebDirect.
3. Click the FileMaker WebDirect tab .
The WebDirect settings appear.
4. Click the “Enable FileMaker WebDirect” option .
Optionally, you can change the default session timeout setting of 15 minutes and
change the Status Area Language. If you reduce the timeout setting to release connec-
tions more quickly, that can help manage a limited number of concurrent connection
licenses.
5. Click Save .
A warning box appears to let you know that you must restart the WPE to apply your
changes. You have the option to revert the changes or save them. If you're starting
WebDirect for the first time, you won't have any connected users. But each time you
change these settings, you have to restart the WPE, which could interrupt work for
those users. So you may want to only make changes at low-use times of the day.
You're ready to test WebDirect. You can use the Technology Tests page ( Figure 19-6 ) or
manually open your database from FileMaker Go or from a browser. Read on to find out
how.
Opening a Database in FileMaker Go
You can connect to hosted databases through a mobile device, such as an iPad, iPhone, or
iPod Touch. First, go to the App Store and download the right software for your device. (See
the box on What About Android? to learn what to do if you're using a non-iOS device.)
NOTE
You can connect to databases hosted by FileMaker Server or from FileMaker Pro with peer-to-peer
sharing enabled ( Understanding Database Sharing ). However FileMaker is not well-powered for in-
tensive tasks, and is only suitable for light use.
