Database Reference
In-Depth Information
Figure 20-2. Use the FileMaker Web-Direct Settings dialog box to configure files, either individu-
ally or as a group. The list on the left shows an open file, called Web Orders. If you have multiple
files open, you can choose them all to configure them all at once, but in that case the options for
setting extended privileges are limited to “All users” and “No users.” If your database uses mul-
tiple files, but you don't want them all to show up on the WebDirect home page, select “Don't dis-
play in FileMaker WebDirect homepage” for those files.
WARNING
If you're using files that you created in FileMaker 12 and shared with Instant Web Publishing
(IWP), you must turn off the fmiwp extended privilege or the files won't be available in WebDirect.
Setting Up WebDirect on FileMaker Server
FileMaker Server is made up of three parts: a database server, a web server, and the Web
Publishing Engine (WPE). The database server handles the sharing and distribution of data
for all connections using FileMaker Pro. The web server is part of the server computer's op-
erating system, and as such it handles HTTP or HTTPS requests from users on the Web. The
Web Publishing Engine (WPE) handles WebDirect and Custom Web Publishing ( Customiz-
ing the WebDirect Home Page ) services for your databases.
If you're starting from scratch and installing FileMaker Server for the first time, it's easy to
turn on its web server components. Just select those options in the installation wizard. But if
you didn't do that up front, you can still turn on WebDirect after you've been sharing the
database with network sharing only.
