In-Depth Information
NOTE
You can use any FileMaker database as a sample file for this chapter.
Understanding WebDirect
WebDirect is a feature of FileMaker Server that transforms layouts and their data so web
browsers can interact with your database without FileMaker Pro. It works along with
FileMaker Server and the web server software on the server computer to create everything
you'll need to share databases beyond regular network sharing. WebDirect is best suited for
light use by folks who need limited access to specific records—field technicians, vendors,
customers, or other third-party users. It can also be useful where installation of FileMaker
Pro is restricted by IT regulations.
WebDirect uses layouts you've designed specifically for folks who don't have a copy of
FileMaker Pro. But even without FileMaker, users work with data in ways that look and feel
very FileMaker-like. They can browse, find, and edit records; switch layouts; and run your
carefully crafted scripts. As with FileMaker Network Sharing ( Understanding Database Shar-
ing ), each user must have an account with the fmwebdirect extended privilege ( Assigning
Extended Privileges ), and they need to know your server's IP address or domain name. With
all that in place, they can open and work on the database anywhere they have Internet access.
WebDirect sharing through a browser requires FileMaker Server, which starts out giving you
a single connection without additional licensing fees. See the box on Concurrent Connec-
tions to learn how to figure out how many licenses you need to buy for simultaneous connec-
tions.
For non-Apple mobile devices, like Android, Blackberry, or Windows Phone, you must con-
nect with the browser on those devices. Not all browsers are compatible though. Here's the
list of browsers that FileMaker supports:
▪ Safari 6.x (Mac OS)
▪ Safari 7.x (iOS)
▪ Internet Explorer 9.x or 10.x (Windows)
▪ Chrome 27.x (Mac or Windows)
Browsers not listed above may still work—they just need to be able to handle CSS and
JavaScript. If your love for your favorite unsupported browser outweighs compatibility con-
