Database Reference
In-Depth Information
2. From the Hosts pop-up menu, select Local Hosts .
FileMaker searches your local network and shows a list of all the servers it finds.
3. Select your server from the list (even if it's the only choice) and then enter the ac-
count name and password into the appropriate fields. Click Next .
The dialog box changes panels to show the server IP address and destination folder.
The list of files is empty.
4. Click the Browse button, locate the file you want to upload and then click Open .
Your file is added to the list, with a checkmark next to the file name. The Status
means the file is ready to be uploaded. If you've uploaded a previous version of the
file, the Status will read: “File already exists on the server.” The “Automatically open
databases (on server) after upload” option is turned on by default. If you're uploading
a single file, leave it turned on. But if your solution contains multiple files, you might
want to use Open→Remote to test your opening script's routine.
5. To add more files, repeat step 4. FileMaker Server can host up to 125 database
files at once. After you've added all the files you need, click Upload .
The Status column changes to a progress bar and the file opens if you left the auto-
matic open option selected. If not, choose Open→Remote and select the file you want
to open.
NOTE
If you try to open the local copy of your database after you've uploaded it to the server, FileMaker
warns you and then gives you a choice to open the local or the server version of the file.
Uploading a Database Manually
If you're the hands-on type, or if you're used to the old ways, you can still prepare and move
files to the server manually. Make sure the accounts and privilege sets of all clients who'll
access the database through FileMaker Pro have the appropriate extended privileges
( Chapter 18 ) . If you need to limit the number of client's connected, select the option to “Dis-
connect user from FileMaker Server when idle.” Turn off network sharing for the database
(File→Sharing→Share with FileMaker Clients) and then close the file. Use your favorite
method of moving the file to the server into the appropriate folder:
▪ Windows: [drive]:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\Data\Databases\
▪ OS X: /Library/FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/
