NOTE
A multiple machine installation may require the help of a network specialist and a web server tech-
nician to make sure the web server is running and all the ports you need are opened properly. If you
think you're a candidate for a multiple-machine setup, check out the FileMaker Server 13 Getting
Started Guide for details.
Installing FileMaker Server
Like most software these days, you can still buy a boxed product, but more often, FileMaker
Server is delivered electronically. Once you've paid for the software (or received your up-
grade notice), you'll receive an email from FileMaker, Inc., with instructions for download-
ing the installer. Follow those instructions and then make a backup of the installer program.
Then copy the installer on your server and double-click to launch it. After you accept the li-
censing agreement, you'll see the Installation Type window, shown in Figure 19-4 .
WARNING
FileMaker Server 13 requires exclusive control of TCP ports 40 and 443, the main ports used to
server web pages. Older versions of FileMaker Server could coexist with web server software on the
same computer, but FileMaker Server 13 conflicts with web server software by taking control of
those ports even if you're not using any form of FileMaker web publishing . The easiest workaround
is to install your web server on a second computer.
After you choose an installation type, the User Account window appears. Here's where you
type a user name (usually the name of the database administrator, but it may also be the com-
pany owner's name), or select the default (fmserver) account.
The user account is the operating system account for the computer FileMaker Server runs on.
After you click Next, the Customer Information window appears; type the user name, your
organization's name, and your License Key. Once you enter a valid key, the installer finishes
the installation automatically. This process may include an additional step to install the latest
version of Java software.
