DAMAGE
Infestations are most common on young trees, but
damage caused is of little or no significance.
Periclista albida (Klug) ( 1012-1013 )
syn. P. melanocephala (Fabricius)
A widely distributed species in association with oak
( Quercus ). The adult females (5-7 mm long) have a
mainly reddish-yellow thorax, a yellowish, brown-
spotted abdomen and a black head and black antennae;
although the wing veins are black, the pterostigma on
each fore wing is yellow. The larvae are green with a
black head, the body bearing numerous, mainly black,
Y-shaped, thick-stemmed spines. Adults occur in April
and May, and the larvae feed on the underside of the
expanded leaves from May to June. Pupation takes
place in the ground in silken cocoons. Individuals
overwinter as prepupae and pupate in the spring.
