most often noticed in August or September when they
have completed feeding and are about to enter the soil
to pupate, individuals at this stage becoming tinged with
purple or purplish brown. Adults (60-75 mm wingspan)
occur in May and June, and are greyish ochreous to
pinkish ochreous, suffused with greenish grey; the fore
wings usually possess an irregular, dark olive-green
median crossband.
