Balinesia
Balinesia emerged in the mid-1980s with rock bands that favoured covers and drew large
crowds. To be an AC/DC wannabe, to cover Gary Moore's songs, to shred guitar as fast as
Rainbow's Ritchie Blackmore, was considered ultracool.
But the Balinesia breakthrough came in 2003 when the first big Balinese band, punk-rock-
styled Superman Is Dead (SID) , released their debut album, Kuta Rock City , with a major
label, Sony Music Indonesia. They were the first Balinese band to make it big outside Bali
and the first to record mostly in English (with about thirty percent of their songs in Indonesi-
an). Having toured Australia, and participated in the legendary Warped Tour around the USA
in 2009, they went on to break into the US Billboard chart.
