Most dramas are performed either within a temple or palace compound. The
costumes and
masks
give immediate clues to the identity of each character - and the action that is to fol-
low. Some are performed in a combination of contemporary Bahasa Indonesia and the ancient
literary Kawi language, while others stick to modern speech, perhaps with a few humorous
English phrases thrown in for the tourists.
