Wathan, which was founded in east Lombok by Guru Pancor in the 1930s. It now runs more
than seven hundred Islamic schools in Lombok and Sumbawa and has many adherents among
government officials. Significantly, the current provincial governor, Zainul Majdi (popularly
known as Guru Bajang, or “Young Teacher”), is Guru Pancor's grandson.
