In-Depth Information
iously pretty twin crescents of Tanjung Aan , 5km from Kuta. The usually calm Aan , on the
west side of the offshore outcrop, is perfect for swimming and (partially shaded) lounging;
Pedau , to the east, has a rip tide . There are two cafés (8am-9pm) that offer shaded parking,
grilled fish, parasols and drinks, plus the occasional sarong hawker.
Beyond Tanjung Aan, the fishing village of Gerupuk , 8km from Kuta, sits on the western
shores of Gumbang Bay. Lobster is the main source of income here, but with five famously
good surf breaks within a fifteen-minute boat ride, surf-tourism is also important; surf shops
rent boards and arrange boats to the breaks (Rp75,000/person). From Gerupuk, you can look
across the huge bay to Bumbang on the eastern shore and a rent a boat for snorkelling or to
get to Ekas (Rp600,000 for a day-trip; 90min each way).
The thriving fishing village of Awang , 16km east of Kuta, is worth the trip to see scenic
Awang Bay , also known as Ekas Bay , with views east across to Ekas and south to the open
sea. Boats to Ekas can be chartered for about Rp300,000 return.

Lombok's isolated southeast peninsula is way off the beaten track. Travel isn't easy but the
coastal views are startling and there's good surfing and some unique accommodation.
The road to the peninsula leaves the southern highway at Sepapan and splits at Jerowaru
- turn right at the southern end of the village, 4km from the highway. To continue south, turn
left after another 1.5km at the Masjid Al-Muntaha mosque in the village of Tutuk . Carry on
