cold-water bath-rooms. The decor isn't fancy but rooms (in two-s torey blocks) are a good

modern homestay run by a charming New Zealand-Lombok couple, 600m north of central
Kuta. A dozen large and sparklingly clean guest rooms - all with a/c and cold-water bathroom
- surroun d a lawn with two pools. There's a shared hot shower and a communal kitchen too.

EATING AND DRINKING
Portions are large and prices generally reasonable at Kuta's restaurants, not least because of
the surfers who return year after year. Nightlife mostly consists of a couple of local bands
that play at one or other of the restaurant bars several nights a week.
Ashtari 0877 6549 7625, ashtarilombok.com . Occupying a spectacular panoramic
hilltop position 3km west of central Kuta on the Mawun road, with breathtaking views over
the Kuta coastline, this is a great place to chill out for a few hours. The vegetarian menu lists
healthy breakfasts, a good Indian veggieburger (Rp70,000), focaccia sandwiches (Rp50,000)
and salads, juices and cake. Seating is on cushions, and board games and magazines are avail-
able. They also run yoga sessions here. Daily 6.30am-8.30pm.
Café 7 Jl Pantai Kuta 0817 575 5808. Good, hearty servings of pasta, plus pizzas, deep-
fried prawns (Rp45,000) and cocktails (Rp50,000). Often a nice relaxed buzz in the evening,
with shisha pipes and live music on Monday and Friday. Daily noon-11pm.
Kuta Steak House Jl Pantai Kuta 0821 4424 1365. Good-quality grilled steaks from
Rp85,000, surf 'n' turf for Rp100,000 and delicious lunchtime burgers for Rp45,000. There's
a children's menu, too. Daily noon-10pm.
Magic Café Jl Pantai Kuta. Squishy armchairs and a 6-7pm happy hour bring in the punters
at sundown. There's also illy coffee, cakes and ice creams, plus tapas and more substantial
dishes. There's live rock music twice a week. Daily noon-midnight.
Nana's One of several warung lining the road towards the bypass, Nana's is recommended
for excellent, affordable Indonesian food, including good spring rolls (Rp12,000), vegetarian
nasi pecel (tofu, rice, tempeh, veg and peanut sauce) and a killer “banana beng beng” dessert,
prepared with a Beng Beng chocolate bar. Daily 8am-11pm.
Warung Bule Jl Pantai Kuta 0819 1799 6256. A warung in a class of its own, and at
deliciously good-value prices, run by a chef who cooked at the Novotel for seven years. High-
lights include lobster, mahi-mahi and prawns in two sauces (Rp250,000), seared tenderloin
steak (Rp145,000) and mushroom “cappuccino” soup (Rp32,000). There are cheaper mains,
too - and a bit of a sea view. Daily 8am-10pm.
