East Lombok
With an arid climate, sparse population and few facilities, east Lombok doesn't entice many
visitors, although if you're heading to or from Sumbawa (see By ferry ) you'll pass through
the port of Labuhan Lombok (75km east of Mataram). The one reason to linger is the pro-
spect of good snorkelling at the uninhabited islands off Labuhan Pandan .
While in east Lombok, don't miss the principal mosque in Masbagik , Masjid Al-Jami Al-
Akbar: it's on the main trans-Lombok highway, in the heart of this busy town, and is one of
the largest in Lombok. Across the road, cash-starved travellers staying in Tetebatu or Sap-
it will find an ATM . Signed south off the highway, 1.5km east of Masbagik's mosque, is
the pottery-producing village of Penakak , whose road is lined with large and small outlets
selling a vast array of pottery from all over Lombok.
