THEY DON'T MEAN TO SPOIL YOUR HOLIDAY
Walk along the beach or eat at a streetside restaurant in central Senggigi and you'll be ap-
proached by one or more of the local hawkers selling sarongs, pearls, T-shirts, paintings,
more pearls, tours, transport and yet more pearls. It can be irritating, but it's worth bear-
ing a few things in mind. Despite the tourist gloss, many people in Lombok are poor. Em-
ployment opportunities are few, not least because you need either a considerable amount
of money, or well-placed connections, to secure many jobs, from government positions to
jobs in hotels and restaurants. Family land is often insufficient to support all the people de-
pendent on it. Working as a hawker in Senggigi is a way of trying to escape the cycle - a
reality that admittedly is not the first thing that comes to mind when you're faced with the
umpteenth request of the day to “just have a look please”.
SHOPPING
Asmara Collection Jl Raya Senggigi 0370 693109. Good-quality handicrafts, jewellery
and textiles, and a few antiques. Daily 9am-9pm.
