In-Depth Information
shore. Just 1.5km west of Tawun harbour is the Balinese-Sasak village of Batu Leong , where
there's a decent choice of accommodation and good swimming in the calm, shallow waters.
The three tiny islands of Gili Nanggu, Gili Tangkong and Gili Sudak are each encircled
by white-sand beaches and are good for swimming. Lovely little GILI NANGGU (Rp5000
entry), a twenty-minute boat ride from Tawun, has excellent snorkelling, with lots of fish. It
sees the most visitors, and suffers from a bit of a rubbish problem as a result. There are shady
trees and lounging berugaq on the shore, as well as a restaurant and rudimentary thatched-hut
accommodation . East of Gili Nanggu lies very quiet, uninhabited GILI TANGKONG . East
again, GILI SUDAK has decent snorkelling at the reef just off its golden beach and a simple
restaurant grilling fish for day-trippers.
Tembowong , about 12km east of Tawun, provides access to GILI GEDE , the southwest's
largest island, measuring about 4km from north to south. The island has half a dozen fishing
hamlets around its coast with a few paved footpaths and only a handful of motorbikes; walk-
ing around it takes about four hours. The shore is fringed with a mix of beaches and man-
grove, offering fine views to the mainland hills and other nearby islands. Electricity is limited
on the island, and tap water is brackish.
Pandanan
A kilometre west of Cocotinos brings you to PANDANAN , 23km from Lembar, where Dive
Zone (see Diving and snorkelling in southwest Lombok ) is right on the beach, opposite the
unfinished blue-roofed Sundancer resort.
About 700m west of Sundancer (400m east of the Balai Budidaya Laut marine research
complex), a dirt track snakes seawards, bringing you to the gorgeous sandy peninsula of Elak
Elak (or Ela Ela), with great swimming and a sand spit at its northern tip that allows you to
walk to miniature Gili Genting at low tide.
