THE PEARLS OF LOMBOK
Lombok is becoming increasingly recognized as a good place to buy cultured pearls (
mu-
tiara
).
Golden South Sea pearls
are farmed around the coast, especially in southwest and
west Lombok. These saltwater pearls are always expensive and they're sold by the gram
(large South Sea pearls often costing $100 apiece), but quality varies considerably, so for
these you're best off going to a reputable outlet, in Mataram for example, rather than buy-
ing off an itinerant vendor. The

near Bangsal has tours and a reasonably
priced shop. Beach hawkers often sell the cheaper imported Chinese
freshwater pearls
,
which are available in many colours.
