Reef Seen Aquatics turtle hatchery
Daily 8am-5pm • Rp25,000 donation • 0362 93001, reefseenbali.com
Reef Seen Aquatics runs a turtle-hatching project at its dive centre, with young green, Olive
Ridley and hawksbill turtles kept in seawater tanks until they are old enough to be released.
All species have nesting sites in the Pemuteran area, but are endangered and their eggs are
prized. To combat this, Reef Seen purchases eggs from fishermen for a little above market
price and the turtles are hatched and reared before being released off the Pemuteran coast;
seven thousand have been released in the last two years.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: PEMUTERAN
By bemo or bus All Gilimanuk-Singaraja buses and bemos pass through Pemuteran and will
drop you in front of your hotel; they take about 30min from Labuan Lalang or 1hr 20min
from Lovina. If arriving from Ubud or south-coast resorts, it's fastest to take a tourist shuttle
bus to Lovina then hop on to a bus or bemo.
Destinations Cekik (50min); Gilimanuk (1hr); Labuan Lalang (for Pulau Menjangan;
30min); Lovina (1hr 15min); Seririt (45min); Singaraja (Banyuasri terminal; 1hr 30min).
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
All Pemuteran accommodation is accessed from the Gilimanuk-Singaraja road; the most at-
tractive places occupy beachfront land. In high season, many places are booked up by divers,
so it's best to reserve. If luxury escapism is your bag, Santi Sari , 15km west, trumps anything
in the area. For eating, you're in hotel restaurants, all of which serve fresh seafood plus the
usual Western and Indonesian standards - walk down the beach and take your pick.
