ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
All the following are accessed via the road that turns sharply south off the Gilimanuk road;
look for signposts for Gajah Mina and Pondok Pitaya . All accommodation is on the village
road to the coast or the shorefront itself; none is more than a 5min walk from the sea. Ask at
the warung for really cheap rooms. All hotels except homestays have restaurants, and there
are a few warung behind the beach.
Ayu Homestay On the shorefront 0878 6328 1244. A fairly basic surfers' crash pad that
scores most for its good location just up from the beach. The cheapest rooms are dark and
dated, so it's worth paying an extra R p50,000 for one upstairs with ocean views. Expect to
pay Rp50,000 extra for a/c. Rp150,000
Gajah Mina Side road right off descent to beach 0812 381 1630, gajahminaresort.com .
Although not as smart as it was, this French-owned spa hotel remains one of the more up-
market options, with rough-walled antique-furnished bungalows secluded in tropical garden
compounds - a good option fo r a r omantic hideaway, especially in one of the two Honey-
moon Suites with beach views. $150
Made's Homestay On left before descent to the beach 0812 396 3335. Shame that a new
villa development has rather spoiled the view, yet this four-room place at the top of the hill
to the bea ch remains a comfortable stay, with clean cold-water fan rooms close to the beach.
Rp200,000
Pondok Pisces On descent to beach 0361 780 1735, pondokpiscesbali.com . Rich teak,
old doors and traditional furniture lend charm to this long-running place in two locations; just
above the beach and in a garden beside the Balian River (swimming in the river is safe). Ac-
commodation is in rooms and bungalows - from the cute Bu cu Bungalo w fo r solo travellers
(Rp460,000) to two-bed bungalows for families. Doubles $52 , bungalows $63
Pondok Pitaya Behind the beach 0819 9984 9054, baliansurf.com . There's laidback
surfer style here, both in an unbeatable location overlooking the waves - a great spot to laze
by the pool or enjoy the relaxed restaurant - and a range of accommodation. Basic “Surfer
Suite” rooms have hut-style castaway cool, while better houses, which have been imported
from Java then rebuilt here , some dating back to the 1 930s, sleep up to seven. Also runs yoga
classes daily. Doubles $62 , bungalows (for four) $125
