Tulamben
North of Amed, the parched landscape is cut with folds and channels, relics of the lava flow
from the 1963 eruption of Gunung Agung, which rises dramatically inland. The main focus
of tourist attention in these parts is the village of TULAMBEN , site of Bali's most popular
dive, the Liberty wreck , which lies just 30m offshore. Up to a hundred divers a day come
to explore this most accessible of wrecks and, with several hotels and dive shops nearby, it's
perfectly feasible to base yourself here for a few days. That way you can pick your dive times
to avoid the crowds of day-trippers who clog the wreck between 11am and 4pm. The beach is
black and stony and the village itself is dreary, so if you're looking for more of a resort atmo-
sphere you might be better off choosing one of the hotels just outside central Tulamben, or
considering Amed (13km east) or even Lovina, which although 75km west promises a num-
ber of attractions en route.
