In-Depth Information
high-level route that works well as part of a day-trip loop - via Amlapura and Tirtagangga,
with a possible side trip to Pura Luhur Lempuyang, then back via Culik.
As you continue south and west around the coast from Aas, the scenery is breathtakingly
dramatic, with hills sweeping up for hundreds of metres from the coast. The narrow, steeply
undulating and sometimes broken road snakes through dry mountain land used in the wet
season for growing peanuts, soya beans and corn and overlooked by the hulking profiles of
Gunung Lempuyang and Gunung Seraya. It turns inland at Kusambi , about 4km from Aas
and marked by a massive beacon; this is the most easterly point of Bali - on clear days Lom-
bok is visible, 35km across the strait. At Seraya the road heads down to the coast, passing
Seraya Barat and the Ujung Water Palace before reaching Amlapura .

Kelompok Karya Sari Warna Alam , a local weavers' cooperative , lies 14km on from
Kusambi, on the fringes of the small market centre of Seraya , and is well worth a stop. They
grow their own cotton and dye it in the traditional way with indigo and bark harvested from
the workshop garden; you can watch the spinners and weavers at work and then buy their
beautiful scarves and sarongs, recognizable by their muted, natural tones.
