Tirtagangga and around
Famous for its whimsical mid-twentieth century
water palace
and its strikingly pretty land-
scape of plunging rice terraces and dramatic mountain peaks,
TIRTAGANGGA
is a popular
day-trip destination but also makes an enjoyable stopover between Candidasa and Amed. It's
significantly cooler than on the coast and there are countless possibilities for gentle
treks
or
more strenuous full-day hikes or bike trips through the terraced ricefields, rambutan, vanilla
and banana plantations, and tiny villages. Much of the accommodation enjoys fine panor-
amas, especially the quieter places in the neighbouring villages of
Temaga
, 1.5km to the
south, and
Ababi
, 2.5km north, both of which are well off the main road; these villages feel
remote but the accommodation is just ten to fifteen minutes' walk through the ricefields from
central Tirtagangga. On a clear day you get fine views of Gunung Lempuyang to the east, on
whose slopes stands
Pura Lempuyang Luhur
, a worthwhile local trip.
