Candidasa and around
East Bali's main tourist hub,
CANDIDASA
is a relaxed resort with plenty of comfortable
accommodation in all price brackets, some good restaurants, rewarding
diving
and lots of
opportunities for day-trips and treks. All of which makes it an enjoyable and convenient base
for the quieter, less commercial corners of east, central and north Bali. Its one significant
drawback is its disappointing
beach
, which has eroded away since the reef was destroyed to
produce lime for the tourist building boom; it is fronted by a phalanx of groynes and a sea
wall. You can still swim in the sea here, and some hotels do have little patches of sand out
front, but for anything approaching a beautiful beach you have to head 9km east to the lovely
Pasir Putih
. Given the lack of a beach scene, and the minimal nightlife, Candidasa attracts a
slightly older crowd and is increasingly popular with expat villa owners.
Just 3km north of Candidasa is the famous traditional Bali Aga village and weaving centre
of
Tenganan
, while to the east there's the locally important hilltop temple of
Pura Gumang
.
Candidasa is also well placed for excursions to Besakih and Tirtagangga, and further afield
to Amed; it's also easy to arrange treks from here up Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur.
