up a rubbly track, which is quite steep in parts. The beach here has a few tiny warung, and is
overlooked by the skeleton of a long-abandoned hotel project.
Alternatively, a five-minute walk along the left fork just east of Topi Inn will bring you
to the pretty but miniature cove of Blue Lagoon , not much more than 100m long. You can
snorkel here at high tide but beware the serious undertow and high coral. The two restaur-
ants rent snorkel gear (Rp25,000) as well as sunloungers (Rp50,000) and you're sure to find
a couple of massage ladies and sarong-sellers in attendance.

on the main road any bemo between Padang Bai and Semarapura will drop you at the temple
As Bali's directional temple for the southeast, Goa Lawah (Bat Cave), by the coast, is always
busy with worshippers who travel here in community groups to perform rites associated with
significant life events. Discreetly watching the spectacle of the various ceremonies , both in
the temple compound and at the shrine on the beach across the road, is part of the appeal of a
visit. The other highlight is the cave at the base of the cliff, which heaves with fruit bats. It is
supposedly the start of a tunnel that stretches 30km inland to Pura Goa in Besakih and is said
to contain the cosmic naga Basuki. If you engage a local guide to show you round, establish
the fee beforehand; Rp30,000 is reasonable.
