Puri Agung Inn 1km west of the Sidemen road junction, Selat 085 235672. The genial
Yandi offers basic fan-cooled accommodation in a quirky set of buildings. The hotel is in ext
to the main road, so ask for a quiet room at the rear to get away from the traffic. Rp200,000

Over-looking a fine amphitheatre of rice terraces, the large and stylishly decorated villa-style
rooms here have picture windows, colour-washed bathrooms and prettily tiled floors. There

donesian classics, very good papaya curry (Rp28,000) and chicken peanut curry (Rp43,000),
plus some Thai and European food as well. Daily 8am-8pm.
Warung Lihat Sawah Near Kubu Tani, 800m along the left-hand fork 0366 530 0519. A
good choice for eating away from your guesthouse, this warung serves the same good menu
of Thai, Indonesian and European food as its sister restaurant at the Lihat Sawah guesthouse
(mains Rp35,000-45,000). Daily 8am-10pm.
Warung Makan Wayan Selat 0813 3735 6014. Excellent Indonesian food (like nasi cam-
pur for Rp25,000) in a noisy streetside restaurant. Manning the stove is the larger-than-life
Wayan, who trained at the five-star Amankila hotel in Candidasa before starting his own food
business. Daily 10am-9pm.
SHOPS
Lontar Opposite the Pelangi shop. A small souvenir shop with some endek textiles, bags and
clothing items, and some woodwork crafts, but specializing in traditional lontar -palm paint-
ings. Daily 7am-6pm.
Pelangi Southern end of Sidemen's main road 0853 3773 7555. Beautiful endek and
songket (gold- and silver-thread) products (from Rp150,000/m). All textiles are made in
Sidemen, and you can see the production process in the workshop behind the showroom
where the staff dyes and dries threads before weaving the textile using foot-looms. Daily
9am-6pm.

Padang Bai and around
PADANG BAI , the tiny port village for boats to the Gili Islands and Lombok, has developed
into a small, laidback travellers' centre and is also known for its diving . Its beaches are tiny,
but its youthful vibe, funky cafés, cheap accommodation and live music bars may keep you
lingering longer than you intended. There's a daily market and shops stocking basic neces-
