ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: PEJENG
By bemo Coming from Ubud, take a Gianyar-bound bemo to the Bedulu crossroads and then
either wait for a Tampaksiring-bound bemo, or walk the 1km to the temples.
By bike The alternative route from Ubud - by bike or motorbike - is the fairly scenic but
severely undulating 5km-long back road that heads east from the Jl Raya Ubud/Jl Peliatan
junction at the eastern edge of Ubud, passes the Maya Ubud hotel, and then zigzags through
paddies and small villages before finally emerging at the market on the main road, just 25m
north of Pura Penataran Sasih (turn right for the temple).
< Back to Ubud and around
North of Ubud
All three major roads north of Ubud lead eventually to Gunung Batur and its huge crater.
Whether you go via Payangan to the west, Tegalalang directly to the north, or Tampak-
siring to the east, the villages and paddy fields along each route make for a pleasant drive.
Distances are comparable, about 40km to Batur whichever way you go, but the most signi-
ficant tourist sights are located along the most easterly route, around the Tampaksiring area.
Although there's little of specific interest on the westerly route , which takes you via Cam-
puhan and Payangan, this is the quietest, least congested and prettiest of the three, and the
best if you have private transport . The villages on the way are picturesque and in Payangan
you pass the village's famously huge roadside banyan tree. The road eventually brings you to
Pura Ulun Danu Batur on the Batur-Kintamani road, about 5km west of Penelokan.
The central route up to Gunung Batur begins at the eastern edge of Ubud, from the point
where Jalan Raya Ubud intersects with Jalan Peliatan (if you're heading up here on a bicycle,
you might prefer the more peaceful route that starts on central Ubud's Jalan Suweta).
ARRIVAL AND GETTING AROUND: NORTH OF UBUD
By bemo The most frequent and reliable bemo service running north from Ubud is on the
central route via Tegalalang and Pujung; there are frequent bemos along the first section of
the westerly route, as far as Payangan, but only some of them continue as far as Kintamani.
For the easterly route via Tampaksiring, you'll need to change bemos at the Bedulu cross-
roads, just over 5km from the market in Ubud by road.
Tegalalang and Ceking
Seven kilometres north of Ubud, the village of TEGALALANG and its environs produce
a wide range of handicrafts and home accessories , and the entire length of the 12km-long
