South of Ubud
The stretch of road running 13km
south of Ubud
to Denpasar links a string of arts- and
crafts-producing towns, all with long histories of creative activity: Mas, for example, is
famed for
woodcarvings
, Celuk for
silverwork
, and Batubulan for
stone sculptures
. If you
have private transport, the towns that that lie on the main
bemo route
between Ubud and
Denpasar's Batubulan terminal are easily visited as a day-trip from Ubud or from the south-
ern resorts; access from Sanur is particularly easy, with Batubulan less than 10km from its
northern outskirts.
When the main road from Ubud to Denpasar divides at Batubulan's Barong statue round-
prong narrows into a scenic
back road
, which cuts through a series of traditional villages as
far as Sayan, a few kilometres west of Ubud, before continuing to Payangan and eventually
to Kintamani. In addition, there are several other pleasantly rural and peaceful routes that run
just north of Denpasar and take in some of the area's main attractions, such as the
Bali Bird
Park
and
Bali Reptile Park
outside Batubulan,
The Green School
at Sibang Kaja and the
Putrawan Museum of Art
north of Penatih.

it's a 10min ride on the Batubulan bemo, or a 1hr walk
The chief reason to visit the village of
Teges
, sandwiched between Mas to the south and Peli-
atan to the north, is to see the contemporary Balinese paintings at the
Museum Rudana
.
The exhibitions here change, and do not always focus exclusively on modern art, but the mu-
seum's core collection includes plenty of works by the big hitters of the contemporary scene.
They include
Nyoman Gunarsa
,
Made Budhiana
and
Made Wianta
, all of whom are as-
sociated with the influential
Sanggar Dewata Indonesia style
.
Mas
Long established as a major
woodcarving
centre as well as for traditional
Topeng
and
way-
ang wong
masks,
MAS
is a rewarding place both to browse and to buy. However, be warned
that it stretches 5km from end to end and its reputation means that prices are high.
