Warung Nasi Pak Sedan Jl Raya Pengosekan; map . Some of the most economical food
(dishes around Rp10,000) in and around Ubud is served at the low-key Warung Nasi Pak
Sedan : try the tasty house specialty, nasi campur ayam (the classic nasi campur with the ad-
dition of some tasty chicken). Daily 7.30am-5pm.
NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
Ubud is no hotbed of hedonistic nightlife. Most tourists go to an early-evening Balinese
dance performance before catching last orders at a restaurant at around 9pm. The bar scene is
pretty sedate in Ubud, so choose a live music night at one of the town's restaurants or bars to
be sure of a decent crowd. Many places offer free pick-ups within the Ubud area.
DANCE AND DRAMA IN UBUD
The Ubud region is an important centre of Balinese dance and gamelan and boasts dozens
of performance groups. Between them they stage up to nine different dance shows every
night in the area; the tourist office publishes the schedule (which is also available at
ubud.com ) and arranges free transport to outlying venues. Ticket prices are fixed and
cost Rp75,000-100,000 from the tourist office or touts and on the door. Performances gen-
erally start between 7pm and 8pm, and there's unreserved seating so arrive early for the
best spot.
The Kecak (Monkey Dance) and the Barong (Lion Dance) are the most accessible and
visually interesting, while the Legong is more refined and understated. Unusual shows
worth seeking out include the unique all-female Kecak Srikandhi.
If you have only one evening to catch a show, consider seeing whatever is playing at
Puri Saren Agung ( Ubud Palace ), opposite the market in the centre of Ubud. The setting
is atmospheric, with the courtyard gateway and staircase furnishing a memorable back-
drop. The Kecak that's staged twice a month on the nights of the full and dark moon at
the ARMA in Pengosekan, the Cak Rina, is also worth a special effort to catch, as it's an
unusually fiery and humorous version.
BARS AND LIVE MUSIC VENUES
Café Havana Jl Dewi Sita 0361 972973, cafehavanabali.com ; map . This is where
Ubud comes to shake its booty during live Latin music and salsa class sessions. At other
times this great spot just dishes up tasty Cuban and Caribbean favourites like jerk chicken
wings, which can be washed down with a vast array of cocktails featuring Havana Club rum,
including a fine mojito (Rp86,000). Daily 10am-midnight.
