In-Depth Information
BY SHUTTLE BUS
Perama Bali's ubiquitous shuttle-bus operator, Perama, serves all major tourist destinations
on Bali and Lombok. Perama's head office (daily 7am-10pm; 0361 973316, perama-
tour.com ; tickets are also available from the tourist office and some travel agencies) is incon-
veniently located in Padang Tegal at the far southern end of Jl Hanoman, about 750m from
the southern end of Jl Monkey Forest, and 2.5km from the central market. There's no local
bemo or metered taxi service from here; you can either take your chances with touts offering
free transport to whichever accommodation they are promoting or pay one of the drivers that
hang about outside (around Rp30,000-50,000 to central Ubud).
Destinations Bedugul (1 daily; 1hr 30min); Candidasa (3 daily; 1hr 30min-2hr); Gili Islands
(daily; 8hr); Kintamani (1 daily; 45min); Kuta/Ngurah Rai Airport (5-6 daily; 1hr-1hr
30min); Lovina (1 daily; 1hr 30min-2hr); Nusa Lembongan (1 daily; 2hr 30min); Padang
Bai (3 daily; 1hr-1hr 30min); Sanur (5 daily; 30min-1hr); Senggigi (Lombok; 2 daily; 7hr
30min-11hr 30min).
Other services Other shuttle-bus companies come and go, but may offer more convenient
schedules: the tourist office keeps an up-to-date list of operators and sells tickets. They are
more likely to make more central drops (some even offer a door-to-door service), but check
this before booking. The alternative is the transfer service offered by transport touts and some
losmen and hotels. For Pemuteran, Gilimanuk and other parts of northwest Bali, take a shuttle
bus to Lovina and then change on to a westbound bemo for the last coastal stretch.
BY BEMO
Only a limited number of direct bemo services run from Ubud, normally departing every
30min or so from about 6am until around 2pm, then at least hourly until about 5pm. They all
leave from the central market on Jl Raya Ubud. If coming from Batubulan (Denpasar) you
can alight in Peliatan en route; if heading for Campuhan, Sanggingan or Penestanan, you can
connect on to a westbound service at the market. For Nyuhkuning, you'll either have to walk
from the market (about 30min) or negotiate a ride with a transport tout. Change in Batubulan
for services across Denpasar and convoluted connections to southern resorts, the southwest
and Java. Change in Gianyar for connections to Candidasa.
Destinations Campuhan/Sanggingan (5-10min); Celuk (40min); Denpasar (Batubulan ter-
minal; 50min); Gianyar (20min); Goa Gajah (10min); Kedewatan (10min); Kintamani (1hr);
Mas (15min); Peliatan (5min); Pujung (25min); Sukawati (30min).
GETTING AROUND
By bemo It's possible to use the public bemos for certain short hops (generally from
Rp5000): to get to the Neka Art Museum, flag down any bemo heading west; for Pengosekan
or Peliatan take any bemo heading for Batubulan; and for Petulu use the orange bemos to
Pujung or the brown bemos to Tegalalang and Kintamani.
