In-Depth Information
Pondok Baruna Warung
0812 390 0686.
Your best bet for delicious Indonesian cooking
without the fuss of fine dining is the restaurant of the
Pondok
empire: the menu of well-
cooked dishes includes a tasty
ikan pepes
(Rp45,000) and chicken curry with cumin, carda-
mon and coconut milk (Rp40,000).
Daily 7am-10pm.
Ware-Ware
0812 397 0572.
On a waterside deck with an excellent panorama over surf
breaks, boats and beach to Gunung Agung, this is a good choice for food with a view. Fresh
seafood is the choice on a large menu, especially the likes of barbecue tuna or mahi-mahi fil-
lets (Rp80,000).
Daily 7.30am-10pm.
Warung bu Edi
The best
nasi campur
on the island comes from this simple warung; just
witness the stream of expats and locals at midday who come for a feast that might include
spicy chicken,
gado-gado
and fried prawns, all for Rp20,000. Also offers takeaway.
Daily
9am-8pm.
Warung 99 Mealshop
Nothing fancy, yet this is a decent village-centre option for cheap In-
donesian and Chinese dishes, including
kolobak
(spicy meat and veg) and
fu yung hai
(om-
elette with vegetables, chicken or shellfish; Rp22,000) at budget prices with great views of
the bay.
Daily 8am-11pm.
THE REST OF THE ISLAND
Beach Club Sandy Bay
Sunset Beach, a 5min walk from Dream Beach 0828 9700 5656.
While perhaps not the gastro-force it once was, this chic spot remains a fine place to spend
a day. Seafood stew with fish, squid, clams and king prawns (Rp95,000) appeals on a menu
that takes in barbecued fish and meat, tacos and pizza. Spend Rp100,000 during the day and
you can use the sunloungers and pool. SMS or phone for free transport.
Daily 8am-11pm.
Café Pandan
At Dream Beach Bungalows, Dream Beach 0813 3873 7344.
There are
all the usuals on a menu encompassing Indonesian, Balinese and Thai curries, with dishes
like
pepes udang
(steamed prawns) or grilled tuna or snapper (Rp58,000). But the reason
you're here is the view, perhaps with a cocktail and a dip in the hotel pool (Rp50,000).
Daily
8am-10pm.
DIRECTORY
Banks and exchange
There is one ATM next to
Warung 99 Mealshop
- MasterCard only
and often empty until someone bothers to fill it again. Several places change money in Jun-
gutbatu (at poor rates) and moneychangers cash travellers' cheques and offer credit card ad-
vances (eight percent commission, passport required).
Health centre
The island's health centre (
klinik
) is on the main road in Jungutbatu.
