It's named after the Hindu symbol of good fortune, incidentally. $58

One of Bali's original boutique hotels, founded in 1962, remains an intimate joy, with 28
beautifully furnished traditional-style cottages of varying sizes, each with a courtyard garden;
expect antique floor tiles and tasteful Javanese batik furnishings. Add in a large pool, a
garden that runs to the s hore , faultless service and nothing louder than cooing doves and
you've one relaxing stay. $212

cheapie with twenty fan-cooled or a/c rooms, some with hot water, all well maintained and
with outside s eating are as. Although a new kitchen block has rather cramped the garden, it

EATING
Beachfront cafés abound between Sindhu and Batujimbar; handy for a day on the beach,
romantic by candlelight at night. None stands out for cuisine, so stroll the promenade and
take your pick. The most authentic Indonesian food and cheapest eats are beyond the main
drag; the night market (6pm-midnight) inside the Sindhu Market at Jl Danau Tamblingan/Jl
Danau Toba, and the surrounding lanes, are good hunting grounds.
Café Batujimbar Jl Danau Tamblingan 75A 0361 287374. There's understated modern
style and a good menu at this relaxed Sanur institution: it swings from roast vegetable
salads, stone-grilled burgers and home-made mushroom ravioli to Indo favourites
(Rp60,000-70,000) like rendang and nasi udah (rice cooked in coconut milk with beef and
chicken). Daily 7.30am-11pm.
Char Ming Jl Danau Tamblingan 97 0361 288029. Glorious formal restaurant housed in
a high-ceilinged bale with wooden carvings and statues. The menu nods to French as well as
Indonesian dishes like sauteed jumbo prawns (Rp195,000) or for a splurge, the two-person,
ten-dish rijsttafel platter (Rp350,000). Daily 6-11pm.
Grocer & Grind Jl Danau Tamblingan 152 0361 270635. A little piece of Melbourne,
this outpost of Aussie metropolitan cool is your spot for good coffee and pastries, fine sand-
