ACCOMMODATION
You're spoilt for choice for accommodation here. Most in Kuta is of the cheap and cheerful
variety - plain but generally clean losmen and rather dated but perfectly acceptable mid-range
places. Legian, Seminyak and Kerobokan have more expensive, more chic accommodation,
much of it on the beach. Things are quieter still in Canggu.
KUTA AND TUBAN

rooms and rock memorabilia in public areas disguise a rather dated resort hotel of the Hard
Rock franchise. Yet it's central and ha s the largest free-form swimming pool in Bali to enter-
tain the kids. Rates rise at weekends. $306

map . As basic as it gets in the cheapest fan-only rooms - there's a bed, a rudimentary bath-
room with hot water and outside s eating - and things are a mite shabby, if clean. But what a

though you'd never know it in this backpackers' favourite with simple, spotless rooms ar-
ranged around quie t gardens and a pool. A/c costs an extra Rp50,000, hot water more still.

modern Deluxes (refurbished in 2013), and bungalows in Balinese style, all with a/c and hot
water, and all a minute fr om the beach in a po pular mid-range place with a garden, large pool

Losmen Arthawan Poppies 2 0361 752913; map . Comfort means a fan, a cold-water bath-
room and an outside sitting area in the four rooms of this tiny, basic c ompound . Where it
scores is the price (which includes breakfast) and super-central location. Rp150,000

that named the lane: twenty traditionally styled thatch cottages scattered in a tropical garden
around a pool. Think charming rather than cutting- edge cool, with local fabrics and garden
bathrooms plus the usual mod cons. Reserve ahead. $125
The Sandi Phala Jl Wana Segara 0361 753780, thesandiphala.com ; map . Accom-
modation in lofty thatched rooms and suites that marry modern style with traditional design,
mature gardens with a pool, faultless staff and a beach location - welcome to the “world's
most blissful beach hotel” (World Boutique Hotel Awar ds 20 13), which feels like it's on an-
other island and not a mere 20min walk to central Kuta. $409
