Task 14: Determine the Summary Route for the Entire
Network
Use the networks in the list that follows to determine a summary route for the entire network.
List the East, West, and Central summary routes in binary format.
Step 1.
EAST summary: 11000000.10101000.00000100.00000000
WEST summary: 11000000.10101000.00000111.00000000
CENTRAL summary: 11000000.10101000.00000110.00000000
Count the number of leftmost matching bits to determine the mask for the summary route.
Step 2.
How many leftmost matching bits are present in the networks? 22
1.
What is the subnet mask for the summary route in decimal format? 255.255.252.0
2.
Copy the matching bits and then add all 0s to determine the summarized network address.
Step 3.
What is the summary route in binary form? 11000000.10101000.00000100.00000000
1.
What is the network address for the summary route in decimal format? 192.168.4.0
2.
Packet Tracer Companion: Challenge Route Summarization
(6.4.5)
Packet Tracer
Companion
You can now open the file LSG02-Lab645.pka on the CD-ROM that accompanies this topic to repeat
this hands-on lab using Packet Tracer. Remember, however, that Packet Tracer is not a substitute for a
hands-on lab experience with real equipment. A summary of the instructions is provided within the
activity.
Activity 6-6: Troubleshooting Route Summarization
(6.4.6)
Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to
Discover errors in route summarization
Propose solutions for summarized routes
Document the corrected summarized routes
Scenario
In this activity, the LAN IP addressing has already been completed for the network shown in Figure 6-
21. VLSM has been used to subnet the address space. The summary static routes shown in Table 6-14
are incorrect. You will need to troubleshoot the summary routes that have been assigned to determine
where errors are present and determine the correct summary routes where needed.
