Advantages and Disadvantages of Automatic Summarization
Automatic summarization has both advantages and disadvantages.
List two advantages to automatic summarization.
Smaller routing updates are sent and received, which uses less bandwidth for routing updates
between R2 and R3.
A single route representing multiple networks results in a faster lookup process in the routing
table.
What is the main disadvantage of automatic summarization?
You cannot have discontiguous network configurations because these configurations do not converge.
Automatic Summarization Example
Figure 5-8 shows a topology with multiple classful networks. Answer the questions that follow the
topology.

R4
172.16.3.0/24
What are the classful networks used in this topology? Also, indicate the default subnet mask for each.
10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/16, 192.168.1.0/24
Is the address assignment contiguous or discontiguous?
Contiguous
What router or routers are boundary routers, and what classful addresses are each the boundary of?
R1 is a boundary router for 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/16, and 192.168.1.0/24.
R5 is a boundary router for 10.0.0.0/8 and 172.16.0.0/16.
Will the network be fully converged with RIPv1 routing?
Yes, because it is contiguous, RIPv1 will converge.
