By adding layers at varying transparencies, you can continue to refine the light and
dark areas. To get at the details, work from the big shapes to the smaller ones. By
adding and merging the layers, you can control the values as well as both deepen
the shadows and add lighter colors to bring out the forms that define the features. It's
like sculpting with paint, or in this case color and value. When one is satisfied with
a layer and thinks that the goals for that layer have been accomplished, merge that
layer, open another layer, and continue to refine the painting. In the following screen-
shot, you can see the features of the face starting to take shape:
