Building Game
Objects
This chapter will show you how to build simple low-polygon objects that we will
use to build a scene in Chapter 5. You will then use some very basic mapping tech-
niques to add some textures to the objects. But you'll start by making an old rusty
oil barrel.
When you start a new scene, there is nothing in the virtual world to work with. The
first thing you need is a starting point. 3ds Max provides a number of primitives,
which you can shape and alter. You'll notice in the Create panel, located in the
Command Panel, there are several choices under Object Type. Try them out and
see how they react in the viewports when you click and drag with the left mouse
button. You might notice that it takes two clicks to make any of the primitives. One
direction allows you to set the width, and another allows you to set the height. You
can watch the specifics of the parameters in real time as you create them in the
viewports. Sometimes you'll eyeball what you want, and other times you'll want to
make things in a specific width and height.
Building an Old Oil Barrel
Now you can start building some objects to populate your world by building an
old oil barrel, similar to what might have been used during World War II.
1. In the Command Panel, click on the Create tab and then click on the
Cylinder Primitive button.
2. Starting in the Top viewport, click and drag to any width.
