Finishing the Model
The next thing you need to tackle is finishing the modeling of the hand and fingers.
Scroll down to that area of the model to begin.
1. Start with the thumb. Select the polygon along the front of the palm near
the wrist and extrude it out, as shown in Figure 6.78.
2. Move the upper vertices down along the thumb to give the base of the
thumb a better shape. Refer to Figure 6.79.
3. Now extrude the polygon outward to the knuckle and then to the end of the
thumb, as shown in Figure 6.80. Scale the extrusions to taper the thumb as
shown.
4. To save polygons we will only give our character two fingers. One finger will
be the first finger from the thumb, and the other will be a combination of
the remaining three fingers. The three fingers will be defined in the texture.
This method allows the character to point and be expressive with her hands
without us having to use polygons for each digit. Adjust the vertices of the
palm, as shown in Figure 6.81, to prepare for extruding the fingers.
