chapter 5
Building Game Worlds
This chapter will explain game-world creation. It will cover building and texturing
a world, along with using 3ds Max as a world editor. What you'll do is apply a height
map and a texture map to a plane. A height map is simply a black-and-white
texture that, when used as a height map, will move vertices up or down, depending
on how dark or light the texture is. You'll apply a texture map to the plane map to
give the model some realism.
Creating the Terrain
The first thing you'll do is create the world's terrain.
1. Start by making a plane in the Top view (see Figure 5.1). Set the attributes
as follows:
Length: 1000.0
Width: 1000.0
Length Segs: 50
Width Segs: 50
Leave the rest of the attributes at their defaults.
2. Convert the plane to Editable Poly.
3. In the Modifier menu, select Displace.
4. In the Parameters box, click under Bitmap in the None box.
5. When the new dialog box opens, find and select Height_map.bmp.
