Festivals
Italians take their festivals seriously. In Venice, the sheer variety and frequency of its tradi-
tional festivals means that there is something authentic to experience all year round. Nearly
anything can be cause for celebration—a saint's day, a religious or civic holiday, the ripen-
ing of a certain vegetable, the unveiling of the season's wine, remembrances of important
historical events, and of course, Carnival. Traditional arts often take center stage at these
cultural extravaganzas, as they serve as a source of local pride and collective memory. Here
