Visiting Venetian Artisans
Many stores and artisan workshops in Venice are multigenerational enterprises,
some in operation for a century or longer. However, change is inevitable and
sooner or later, businesses relocate or close. The older members of the family pass
on, and the new generation takes the family tradition in a new direction. It is frustrating for
travelers to go to the trouble to buy a guidebook and locate an artisan studio, only to find it
shuttered or relocated.
For this reason, rather than listing specific artisans here, I have created a separate ebook
complement to this guide called Artisans of Venice . I conceived Artisans of Venice as a digit-
al companion to this topic. My goal for Artisans of Venice is to keep the listings as updated
as possible in order to ensure the best experience for you as a traveler and shopper.
You can download a free copy of ARTISANS OF VENICE from my web site at
WWW.LAURAMORELLI.COM .
While having list of high-quality artisans is convenient, it does not replace the acute eye
of a discerning shopper. The skills you need to select a quality work of Murano glass or a tra-
ditional piece of Venetian lace will never change. It's all about training your eye to recognize
styles, patterns, artistic conventions, quality, tradition, and value. With this topic, Authentic
Arts: Venice , it is my goal to arm you with the information you need to make smart choices,
no matter which shop or market you visit. The resources below should put you well on your
way to being among the most informed, educated shoppers in Venice. Enjoy your trip!

are also a great place to train your eye before you visit the artisan studios and shops. Be-
