How Books and Paper are Made
The first step in traditional bookbinding involves ensuring that all the folios or quires
(gathered sections of a book) are properly ordered and assembled. Traditionally, the text
block is then placed into a frame and sewn together with linen thread and long cords of vel-
lum or leather. A modest softbound cover made of parchment, vellum, or soft leather might
be attached by threading the linen threads through the cover and sewing them tight.
