Venini
A relative newcomer to Murano, Venini has been in business only since 1921, when Milan
lawyer Paolo Venini traded the bench for a career in glassblowing. With him, he brought a
Milanese taste for streamlined elegance and refined simplicity. By incorporating this more
Milanese flavor, Venini has carved out a distinctive style within the Murano glass tradition.
While many of the big names of Murano glass rely on ostentation and ornateness that is
so characteristic of Murano, Venini creates works of more understated elegance and mod-
ern sophistication. Venini is credited with developing the popular fazzoletto vases designed
to look like folded tissues.
How to Buy Murano Glass
It's worth the trip to Murano to watch molten glass on the end of a rod be transformed as
if by magic into gorgeous vases, glasses, and candlesticks before your eyes. Chances are
you'll arrive at the boat ramp on the south end of the island of Murano. When you disem-
bark, move away from the area as quickly as possible, as hawkers may lure you into one
of the more touristy glass factories bordering the docks that sell lower quality goods for
higher prices. Instead, head toward the glass museum and window shop along the way. The
