In-Depth Information
We should also emphasize that we have no guarantee
that the cognitive architecture we have sketched will re-
sult in something as powerful as human cognition. At
this stage, we can say only that these properties are
sufficient to simulate a wide range of cognitive phe-
nomena, but that many challenging issues remain to be
solved before the full scope of human cognition can be
understood at a mechanistic, and ultimately biological
level. See chapter 12 for more discussion of the limita-
tions of the current framework and directions for future
research.

Summary
In this chapter we have sketched an overall framework
for modeling cognitive phenomena based on neural net-
work principles. We were able to leverage these basic
principles to understand the large-scale specializations
of different brain areas. The interactions between these
specialized brain areas constitute a kind of cognitive ar-
chitecture. Now we are ready to explore a wide range
of cognitive phenomena in the subsequent chapters.
