Proportions as Waterfall Charts Using Gantt
Let's look at the home run data in a slightly different way. What if we could stagger the
columns of the stacked bar chart in Figure 5-10 , so that each player had his own column?
The resulting view would look like the chart shown in Figure 5-12 , complete with pinstripes
in honor of “the Bronx Bombers.”
Admittedly, this chart type doesn't make the most efficient use of space, but it creates a nice
stairstep effect that gives a unique sense of the part-to-whole relationship. How is this made
with Tableau? It makes use of the Gantt chart type. Let's see how.
Let's start by creating a column for each player by dragging Name onto the Columns shelf,
and then change the Marks type to Gantt Bar using the drop-down menu in the Marks card.
Next, drag HR onto the Rows shelf, filter out all the players with less than one home run in
the 2012 season, and sort descending. The resulting view should look like the view shown in
Figure 5-13 .
