Counting Dimensions
We introduced the concept of the Number of Records in the previous chapter. To review,
Number of Records is a Measure field that Tableau generates when you connect to a data
source, and it tells you how many individual records, or rows, are present for each Dimen-
sion (or nominal data type).
To see how it works, connect to the rat sighting data set, and drag the Number of Records
field onto the Text shelf within the Marks card. You will see that there are 35,655 total re-
cords in the rat sightings data set. If you then drag Borough onto the Rows shelf, you will re-
produce the pivot table shown in Figure 3-13 .
