Adding Custom Header Images
Adding custom graphics to a Tableau dashboard can help us achieve our overall objective,
especially when our audience is less “captive,” such as in the blogging and journalism scen-
arios. When done well, graphics can increase the visual appeal and aesthetic of the final
product. We respond emotionally to pictures, and we appreciate thoughtful and tasteful
design. From a functional perspective, adding graphics can serve to introduce the subject or
even add to an emotional effect we are attempting to create.
Custom graphics can help or hinder our cause, depending on how they're implemented. Be-
fore considering how to add custom graphics, it's important to lay down a few rules of thumb
to help us avoid making a mess of the endeavor:
1. Exercise restraint. Don't overdo it, and never add cheesy clip art.
2. Never, ever occlude the data. Blocking marks on a Dashboard is a big no-no.
