In-Depth Information
▪ The Rank column in the table no longer appears, as using the Pages shelf would display
each country's rank for each year.
Now that the Dashboard has been turned into a tool to show data in motion, we need to de-
cide how we will communicate to our audience. We have a few options at our disposal:
▪ If we are going to present the data to our audience live, then we can simply turn on
Presentation Mode by pressing
F7
, clicking on the
Presentation Mode
icon in the top
toolbar, or clicking
Window
→
Presentation Mode
. We will need to determine our talk-
ing points, and how much time we will need to say what we'd like to say. We can set the
Playback to
Slow
,
Normal
, or
Fast
:
.
▪ If we would like to send the Dashboard via email, then recipients can open the Workbook
using Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader and make use of the Playback Controls on
their own.
▪ If we want to broadcast this message over the Internet, then saving to Tableau Public
won't give readers the ability to use the Playback Controls. Instead, the control panel will
turn into a simple Year slider that takes up the entire space of the Playback Control, as
shown in
Figure 14-4
.
The alternative is to create a video of the animation using screen capture software like
Camtasia and then embed the video in a website. I did so, and uploaded the videos to
YouTube:
Showing how the changes have played out over time in this way can have a dramatic impact
if designed, built, and delivered well. The potential is high, and the effort required to achieve
that potential is also fairly high.
