In-Depth Information
▪ The Parameter has been removed so the dashboard only shows Internet users per 100.
That's the story, so we're sticking to it.
▪ The Info icon has been removed, because the dashboard is largely self-explanatory.
▪ Two annotations have been added: one in the map showing Iceland and the other in the
timeline showing the only year since 1994 that a Nordic country didn't lead in usage
rates.
As you can see, there are fewer controls and fewer things to do in this dashboard. Many as-
pects have been simplified, and many elements removed in order to maintain a clear focus on
the message. The goal is to illustrate a single point.
NOTE
There is another type of Dashboard called a storytelling dashboard (that we won't explore
in this chapter), in which users must make a series of specific interactions in order to ex-
plain a multifaceted and sequential message, or “story.”
Another Key Point to Explain: The Emergence of China
There's yet another fascinating story that we may have missed in the exploratory version:
China has recently surged past the United States as the country with the highest total number
of Internet users. To illustrate this fact to an audience, we could create an explanatory dash-
board like the one in Figure 13-34 .
